Stainless Steel Valve :CF8 vs CF8M
Release time:2025.05.20
CF8 vs CF8M: What's the Difference in Stainless Steel Valve Materials?
When choosing stainless steel valves for industrial or commercial applications, material selection is critical. Two of the most common materials used are CF8 and CF8M. While both are part of the ASTM A351 standard for cast stainless steel, their chemical compositions and corrosion resistance differ significantly. This guide will help you understand which material suits your specific needs.

CF8 and CF8M stainless steel valves
What is CF8?
CF8 is equivalent to 304 stainless steel in cast form. It contains approximately 18% chromium and 8% nickel, offering excellent oxidation resistance and good corrosion resistance in neutral or mildly corrosive environments. CF8 valves are commonly used in applications involving freshwater, air, or non-aggressive fluids.
What is CF8M?
CF8M corresponds to 316 stainless steel and includes an additional 2–3% molybdenum, significantly enhancing corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides and marine environments. CF8M is ideal for applications involving saltwater, chemicals, or acidic media.
Feature | CF8 | CF8M |
---|---|---|
Equivalent Grade | 304 Stainless Steel | 316 Stainless Steel |
Chromium (Cr) | 18–21% | 18–21% |
Nickel (Ni) | 8–11% | 9–12% |
Molybdenum (Mo) | None | 2–3% |
Corrosion Resistance | Standard | Excellent (especially chloride-resistant) |
Applications | Freshwater, air, food processing | Marine, chemical, corrosive environments |
Cost | Lower | Higher |
Choosing the Right Stainless Steel Valve Material
Selecting between CF8 and CF8M depends on your medium, temperature, and corrosion requirements. For general industrial use, CF8 offers a cost-effective solution. However, for environments with high chloride content or chemical exposure, CF8M ensures long-lasting durability and reliability.
At JUHAN Valve, we offer a wide range of stainless steel valves using both CF8 and CF8M materials. Our engineering team can help you determine the most suitable solution based on your project's needs.
